Programmable Thermostat: The Basics
Programmable thermostats are all the rage right now, and for good reason! They’re intuitive, stylish, energy efficient, and cost saving. If you’ve been on the fence about switching to a programmable thermostat, or you don’t know much about them yet, here are a few top benefits to having one:
Automatic Temperature Adjustments
It can be easy to forget to turn your thermostat up or down before you leave for the day, leave for a trip, or go to sleep. A device that remembers for you simplifies your life while cutting down on your energy bill! You can choose the temperature it sets to, as well as the time it changes, to fit your schedule and lifestyle.
Good news—you don’t have to schedule out every day! There are basically three kinds of programmable thermostats with three different scheduling options. A 7-day programmable thermostat is great for households where the occupants have varying schedules every day. It’s 100% flexible, so if your life is always changing, your thermostat can change with you.
A 5-2 model has two separate settings, one for the five days of the week, and another for two weekend days. If you have a regular, 9-5 Monday through Friday kind of job, this would be great for you! You can adjust it to change temperatures every time you leave for work and come home, and have a different schedule for your weekends.
If you have a steady week schedule, but varying Saturday and Sunday schedules, the 5-1-1 programmable thermostat is for you. You can program it to work with your weekday schedule and then adjust it specifically to your weekend days, no matter what you have going on.
Zone Your Home
Not only can you give your thermostat exact days and times to adjust the temperature, you control where it adjusts, too! The rooms in your home heat and cool at different rates, and your thermostat should be able to keep up with that. You can section your home into zones that your device will recognize, and heat or cool to your specifications. This is also great if you have rooms in your home that aren’t used as frequently as others! You’ll save energy and money, and you’ll still be comfortable.
Motion/Light Sensors & Humidity Control
In addition to giving your programmable thermostat your specific schedule, some models also use motion or light detection to adjust the temperature. For example, if you can’t nail down a schedule, one of these models will switch to its “away” setting if it doesn’t detect motion or light for a period of time. This way, you can forget about it completely and still save money.
Like the motion and light detecting models, some models also have humidity control. You can set these thermostats to automatically keep the humidity levels where you set them in both summer and winter. Proper humidity levels are essential for both your comfort and your health! The ideal humidity range is between 30 and 50 percent—anything outside of that range can damage your home’s structure and your belongings, and it runs the risk of worsening any allergy or asthma symptoms you have.
HVAC System Alerts
While the energy saved with a programmable thermostat is amazing, there’s another area for huge savings that a standard thermostat just won’t give you—system repairs. A lot of programmable thermostats will alert you when the air filter needs to be changed. When your air filter is covered with dust, airflow slows down and drives up your energy bill. Some thermostats can even tell you when a part needs to be checked or serviced, like the check engine light in your car does. Fixing a part in your system early on will cost you much less than waiting until it breaks down!
Precise Temperature Control
According to the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), a traditional manual thermostat can suffer temperature variances up to five degrees. If your current thermostat isn’t accurate, you might be using more energy than you should be. This is very common—The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that half the energy you use each year goes toward keeping your home comfortable. Programmable thermostats are accurate within half a degree, so you know exactly how much energy you’re using.
