The first time you run the heat this fall, it’s going to smell. Usually, that burnt smell is just dust that settled on the heating components over the spring and summer months burning off. It should go away quickly, within an hour or two.
But if your furnace or heating system is still giving off a burning smell after you’ve run the heat a few times, your HVAC system may be having a problem.
One possible cause is a clogged filter. When the filter is clogged, the furnace’s blower motor works extra hard and can overheat. That can cause a burning smell that is different than the burning dust smell from when you first turn the heat on.
Another possible reason for a burning smell from the air vents is that your furnace is having some sort of electrical issue, which could present a fire hazard.

A gas leak can cause an explosion, so that’s why it’s important you leave the house before making a phone call. The gas company will arrive quickly to find the source of the leak and turn off the gas to your furnace or gas fireplace.
