Why Does My Furnace Smell?

The first time you run the heat this fall, it’s going to smell. Usually, that burnt smell is just dust that settled on the heating components over the spring and summer months burning off. It should go away quickly, within an hour or two.

But if your furnace or heating system is still giving off a burning smell after you’ve run the heat a few times, your HVAC system may be having a problem.

One possible cause is a clogged filter. When the filter is clogged, the furnace’s blower motor works extra hard and can overheat. That can cause a burning smell that is different than the burning dust smell from when you first turn the heat on.

Another possible reason for a burning smell from the air vents is that your furnace is having some sort of electrical issue, which could present a fire hazard.

If your furnace is having a persistent burning smell, call Climatemp Heating and Cooling at 251-968-6006 and we’ll send a technician out to diagnose and fix the problem.

If You Smell Rotten Eggs, Get Out of the House

If you have a gas furnace or gas fireplace, and you smell rotten eggs, get out of the house. The smell means you have a gas leak. Natural gas is odorless, so gas companies put the scent in the gas so technicians and residents can tell that they have a leak.

A gas leak can cause an explosion, so that’s why it’s important you leave the house before making a phone call. The gas company will arrive quickly to find the source of the leak and turn off the gas to your furnace or gas fireplace.

After the leak has been turned off, you can then call Climatemp Heating and Cooling for HVAC repair service or installation.

Of course, we offer pre-season tune-ups of your heating and cooling system that can detect small problems before they become big ones. Call us today at 251-968-6006 for service, or use our contact form and someone will get back to you shortly.

We provide furnace repair and installation, along with a full range of HVAC service to Mobile AL and Baldwin County areas.
